How We Test JOI AI Chat Apps
We don't judge a JOI app from its landing page. We sign up, pay for the tier you'd actually buy, and run real sessions — paying close attention to whether she feels present and responsive on the line, not just looping a script.
We earn a commission on sign-ups, which is exactly why the cons come first. Hyping an app that talks at you instead of with you would cost us the only thing that matters here: whether you can trust what we tell you.
Every app is used over at least two weeks, scored on the same points, and re-checked when it ships changes. Each piece is stamped with the date it was last reviewed.
How a review gets made
We use the product, not the press kit
Screenshots on this site are frames from the live app — the chat thread, the generator, the character creator — not marketing renders. If a screen is not in our own library, it does not appear in a review.
Every capability claim is checked against the product
Feature names, limits, prices and counts come from a verified fact sheet we keep current. A claim we cannot confirm in the product is cut, not softened.
We say what is worse, not only what is better
Each piece names at least one real limitation. A guide that finds nothing wrong with anything is not a guide; it is an ad with paragraphs.
One recommendation, stated plainly
Where we recommend a product we say so in the open, near the top, with the reason attached — rather than burying a preference under a neutral tone.
Pages are dated and revised
These products change monthly. Every article carries a publish date, and pages are rewritten when what they describe stops being true.
What every review has to answer
- Does the conversation hold a character and a scene past the first few messages, and across sessions?
- Do the photos and videos come from the product itself, at the quality the product actually returns?
- What does it cost to reach the thing the page promises — free tier, credits, subscription?
- How much is gated behind signup, and how much can be judged before handing over an email?
- What is missing: the limits, the queues, the things that only show up after the first session.
